Fleet Street Reconstruction Project

The City of Portsmouth is working on the preliminary design and field work for the Fleet Street Reconstruction Project.  This project will include replacement of the underground utilities and reconstruction of the roadway and sidewalks on Fleet Street.  The City hired Portsmouth-based engineering consultant, Underwood Engineers, to complete this work.

While the project is focused on Fleet Street from Hanover Street to Court Street, a larger area will be studied in the initial phases of engineering so that the utilities and other improvements can be properly designed.

Sagamore Avenue Sewer Extension Project

In accordance with a September 2016 Peirce Island WWTF Consent Decree the City has constructed a sewer extension project to extend public sewer service to approximately 88 properties in the area of Sagamore Creek at Sagamore Avenue.

Union Street Reconstruction

This project includes the reconstruction of Union Street from State Street to Middle Street as part of the City’s continued sewer separation to reduce combined sewer overflows. The work included roadway reconstruction, replacement of sidewalks, utility work including new storm drains, separate sanitary sewers and water mains. The project design scope was expanded to include sewer separation in the Willard Avenue area. 

Heritage Avenue Pump Station Replacement

The Heritage Avenue Pumping Station is a small wastewater pumping station that is in need of an upgrade. The upgrade will replace equipment that has outlived its service life and address safety issues.

Contract 1 Sewer Rehabilitation

The City is utilizing data collected from the sewer system infiltration/inflow study to rehabilitate sections of the sewer infrastructure. This work will focus on areas the study found to have excessive infiltration to lessen the amount of groundwater entering the sewer collection system. Infiltration is groundwater that enters the sewer system through leaking manholes and cracked or damaged pipe and inflow is both stormwater and groundwater that enters the sewer system through direct connections such as sump pumps, basement drains, yard drains, catch basins, and rooftop drains. The majority of construction will take place from inside the pipes and manholes (considered “trenchless construction”).

Pease Wastewater Treatment Facility Upgrade

The Pease Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) is the smaller of the two City owned treatment facilities and is located at the Pease International Tradeport. This project will upgrade the Pease Wastewater Treatment Facility to address treatment capacity limitations based on projected buildout of the Tradeport for both domestic and industrial customers.
