Drinking Water Quality

The Portsmouth Water Division routinely monitors water quality parameters and performs water quality sampling and analysis as directed by the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act. Water sources are monitored for radioactive, biological, inorganic, volatile organic, and synthetic organic contaminants. A full list of the required sampling parameters can be found here.

The administrative rules associated with Annual Water Quality Reports require that water suppliers only report those contaminants that were detected in the water. The state (New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services) also requires the Portsmouth Water Division to monitor for certain substances less often than once per year because the concentrations of these substances do not change frequently. In these cases, the most recent sample data are included, along with the year in which the sample was taken.
