City Prepares for Early Season Nor'easter

City staff are preparing for a nor'easter forecasted to bring rain, gusty winds, and storm surge to Portsmouth beginning Friday evening September 25, 2026. While updated forecasts have shown some variability in the track and intensity of this storm, the public should expect rain beginning Friday evening and continuing through Sunday, with rainfall totals ranging anywhere from 2 - 6" inches. 

Coastal and low-lying areas could see flooding due to rain, storm surge, and astronomically high tides.

Preparation and Safety Tips

• Fully charge your cell phone and other electronic devices
• Make sure your flashlights and battery-powered radios have fresh batteries, are ready to use and easy to find
• Stock extra batteries
• Store extra drinking water
• Never approach downed power lines

• Sandbags for flood control are available at local hardware retailers including Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace Hardware, Tractor Supply Company, and White Cap.
• Use Click 'n' Fix to report downed trees, street flooding, or other issues on City property.
