2026 NH Primary Election Information
September 3, 2026
- In observance of Labor Day, City Hall will be closed Friday, September 4 and Monday, September 7
- The Clerk’s Office will be open Monday, September 7 from 3 - 5 pm for any last-minute Absentee Ballot requests or returns
- Due to the Election, the Clerk’s Office will be closed to regular business on Tuesday, September 8
Absentee ballot requests must be received by 5 pm on Monday, September 6.
Absentee ballots must be received at the polls from the voter's Delivery Agent no later than 5:00 pm on Election Day. Absentee Ballots returns will not be accepted at City Hall on Election Day.
All New Hampshire voters must show an approved photo ID to receive a ballot. If a voter does not present an approved photo ID and their identity is not verified by an election official, they will not be allowed to vote.

Eligible Portsmouth residents may register to vote on Election Day at their polling place.

Check your registration status with the NH Secretary of State's Voter Information Lookup prior to the election.
Portsmouth voters who have not voted in the past five years and have not updated their voter registration since the 2024 State General Election must re-register to remain on the voter checklist. State law requires all New Hampshire municipalities to review and update voter records each year.
