Memorial Day Observances Planned in Portsmouth

On Friday, May 26, 2023, at 11 am the American Legion/VFW conducts the annual Burial at Sea Ceremony by the anchor sculpture in Prescott Park. The ceremony includes a performance of patriotic music by the Portsmouth Middle School Ensemble and a wreath-laying on the Piscataqua River.

May 17, 2023The City of Portsmouth announces road closures, parking bans and parking alternatives for Saturday, June 3, 2023, the date of the Portsmouth NH 400 Grand Parade (starting at 11 am), the 97.5 WOKQ Chowder Festival at Prescott Park (11:30 am to 2 pm) and Piscataqua RiverFest at Strawbery Banke Museum (10 am to 4 pm). The City is expecting an influx of thousands of visitors and significant limitations on road access to the locations where these large events are taking place.

Market Street Closed to Traffic May 8 to May 12, Open to Pedestrians
May 12, 2023UPDATE: Market Street between Bow and Market Square is now REOPENED to vehicles, day and night. Businesses are OPEN and pedestrian traffic continues. Parking limits still in effect.
Starting Monday May 8, 2023, the DPW sewer line work on Market Street in conjunction with the ongoing utility code compliance project between Bow and Daniel Streets requires closing the street completely overnight for several days that week.

May 5, 2023The Portsmouth NH Police Department is proud to announce the presentation of “Safer Roads” at the Portsmouth Public Library on May 18th, 2023, at 5 P.M. The “Safer Roads” presentation covers updated motor vehicle laws and “what to do” when pulled over by the police. There will be time after the presentation to meet with officers and ask questions.
