Cotton Cemetery
South Street Cemetery is actually five distinct -- and individually owned and stewarded -- cemeteries, two of which are owned by the City of Portsmouth. Those two are Cotton Cemetery and Elmwood Cemetery, both situated between the Clough Drive recreation field and one of the other three private burial sites, Proprietors Cemetery. The other two privately-maintained locations are Harmony Grove and Sagamore.
Cotton Cemetery was established in 1721 when William Cotton and his heirs were granted pasturage under the terms of an agreement that, "The said land shall remain for a 'training field' and to bury the dead in.'"
