DPW Stormwater Operations

The City of Portsmouth’s StormwaterProgram is dedicated  to improving water quality in our  drainage together with reducing  flooding hazards through  comprehensive planning, public  education, and management of the city's stormwater and combined  sewer/stormwater systems.

The Stormwater Program is funded through a Special Revenue Fund, created in FY19, with 50% of funding from the city's General Fund and 50% from the Sewer Fund.

Stormwater infrastructurePortsmouth's Stormwater System consists of:

  • 64 miles of piping
  • 2,701 catch basins
  • 676 manholes
  • 74 stormwater treatment units
  • 202 outfalls

Street sweepingCleaning streets, catch basins and pipes reduces stormwater contamination.

In 2019 the City inspects and cleaned 7,800 ft. of pipe and from catch basins. DPW also collected 300 tons of debris in street sweeping operations in 2018.

The City continues work installing new pipes and separating stormwater.

The City is also applying "green" best practices to infrastructure projects, planting trees in tree boxes, for example, and creating rain gardens in public Adopt-A-Spot locations.
