Richard Haynes Community Mural

Noted local artist, educator, and Director of Admissions for Recruitment and Access at UNH, Richard Haynes, worked with LGBTQIA+ youth, adults, and allies to collaboratively design a mural that was painted by the public at the Portsmouth Pride event at Strawbery Banke. This collaborative mural will be on exhibit at the Portsmouth Public Library from July 1 through July 30 in the lobby.

The 5-week workshop to design the mural engaged students and adult allies in meaningful discussions about the LGBTQIA+ community, identity, belonging, racial equity, and intersectionality while emphasizing art as a tool for activism, community building, and healing. Participants collaborated on designing a mural that reflects shared values, experiences, and aspirations for more inclusive communities.
The mural was painted by intergenerational attendees of the Portsmouth Pride event at Strawbery Banke on June 21, 2025, facilitated by Richard Haynes.

Key partners include South Church, artist Cynthia Velasquez, and NH Outright, to center LGBTQIA+ youth voices in the design process.
