Potential for Discolored Water in Greenland
June 16, 2026
On Wednesday June 17th, 2026, the City of Portsmouth Water Division is beginning a groundwater well pumping test on the Greenland Well. Due to the high rate of flow that will be pumped into the water system, there is a potential for a temporary discoloration of the public water supply in the Greenland area. Discoloration is caused by the mobilization of iron and manganese sediments that have accumulated in the water mains. These deposits are not harmful, but could stain clothes and fixtures, and impart a metallic taste to the water. Water Division crews will be flushing hydrants to minimize the disturbance in water quality. If you discover discolored water, flush cold water through your fixtures for a few minutes. If it does not clear up in this time, wait an hour or so, and flush again. You can contact Portsmouth Water Division at (603) 427-1530 if the discoloration does not clear after these flushing efforts. For more information, visit the Drinking Water Quality page.
