Certified Auxiliary Police Officer (Part-Time)

The Portsmouth Police Auxiliary Unit is a part-time force designed to augment the full-time force, by working outside details and major events. The Auxiliary force is not used to work regular patrol shifts but occasionally is called upon to work coverage patrols while the full-time force is absent.  The members of the Auxiliary force must complete the same mandatory training throughout the year alongside the full-time police officers.

Expectations

  • Must work a minimum of 80 hours of outside work details per year
  • Must work at least 1 coverage shift per year
  • Must complete two 8-hour patrol training sessions per year
  • Must attend Auxiliary meetings
  • Must work two to four major city events per year. Additionally expected to be available, when possible, to assist with large city events.

Minimum Qualifications

Education / Experience:

  1. Must have current police officer certification
  2. Must be a US citizen
  3. Applicant must be 21 years of age prior to receiving a conditional offer of employment
  4. High School diploma or GED equivalent is required
  5. Must have no criminal record
  6. Must possess a valid driver's license

  • Physical Agility Test

  • Oral Board Interview

  • Background Investigation

  • Polygraph

  • Psychological Evaluation

  • Medical Evaluation

  • Chief's Interview
